MobiTV Hits 500,000 Subscribers

USA Today profiles MobiTV, the company that provides dozens of TV
channels to cell phone subscribers. More than 500,000 customers are paying $10
per month to watch TV on a 1-2 inch screen.

Does anyone know how MobiTV markets their service? I’ve never really seen
it advertised. Do the carriers themselves promote it? And if so, how?

The company also announced MobiRadio (50 satellite radio channels) as a
separate subscription at a conference in San Francisco this week.

  2. Having worked since the beginning of internet times with Digital Media, i remember the days we struggled to send video to a computer at 22Kbps. We are at the same point on the mobile TV world and everybody is talking about it. MobileTV took advantage of that first impulse of “coolness” but I am not sure what the churn rate is or will be when people really get annoyed by not being really able to see anything….And it will be sometime to get to a point where technology like UMTS and WCDMA catch up.

  6. Brilliant article, thanks.

But will Mobile Phone users opt for broadcast TV or Internet TV on their handsets?

With Internet TV the motivator is content choice and selection for the user and for them to be able to watch what they want, when they want, not only when a station decides to broadcast. This should even apply to news.

Who wants to have to watch a whole load of broad news hoping they give you something that actually interests you at some point in the programme.

With Internet TV we should be able to search for what we want then get it on demand 24/7 in video on our mobiles, people will be much more likely to pay for content selection and probably pay more as well.
